What Is One Touch Switch?

Man sitting on a beige sofa, smiling while looking at a tablet in a bright living room with a plant nearby.

Switching broadband provider used to be a hassle. You’d have to sign up with your new provider, then separately contact your old one to cancel, coordinate cut-off dates, and hope nothing went wrong in between. One Touch Switch changed all that.

Introduced by Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, One Touch Switch is the rule that means you only need to contact your new broadband provider when you switch. They handle everything else, including notifying your old provider and managing the cut-off date, so you’re not left juggling two companies at once.

Why Was It Introduced?

Ofcom research found that a huge number of people were put off switching broadband simply because of the admin involved. Nearly half were deterred by having to deal with two providers, and a similar number thought the process would take too long. The result was a market where too many people stayed put on poor value deals rather than face the hassle of moving.

One Touch Switch was designed to fix that. With full fibre networks like CityFibre expanding rapidly across the UK, Ofcom wanted to remove the friction stopping people from taking advantage of faster, better connections.

How Does It Work?

  • You choose your new broadband provider and sign up.
  • Your new provider contacts your old one and arranges the switch on your behalf.
  • Your old service is cancelled automatically, with no need for you to call or email them.
  • You won’t pay for both services at once. Notice period charges stop once your new connection goes live.

This applies whether you’re moving between providers on the same network, such as two Openreach-based suppliers, or switching to a different network entirely, such as moving from Openreach to a full fibre alternative network like CityFibre.

What It Doesn’t Cover

  • Business broadband customers aren’t currently covered by One Touch Switch.
  • Mobile broadband is excluded.
  • If your broadband is bundled into your rent or a bills package, the process doesn’t apply.

You can read the full rules on Ofcom’s switching provider hub.

What This Means If You’re Switching to Full Fibre

One Touch Switch is especially good news if you’re upgrading to full fibre. Moving from an old copper-based Openreach line to a modern CityFibre connection used to mean extra coordination between providers. Now, that’s no longer your problem to solve. You place your order, and the switch happens in the background.

At Exascale, our CityFibre Multi-Gig broadband runs on a full fibre network with no CGNAT, strong UK peering, and speeds up to 2.5Gbps. Thanks to One Touch Switch, moving over from your current provider is simpler than ever.
